One third of women surgeons who treat stress urinary incontinence would not elect to have a polypropylene sling.

What percentage of orthopedic surgeons would not take an artificial hip if they had disabling pain from hip arthritis? I think we have a problem. That problem is that AUGS is supporting an old technology device that has a 7.9% rate of revision surgery for complications from the mesh and 17.9% surgical rate for failed treatment of stress urinary incontinence at 15-years. I’m not sure what the FDA is looking at. I know what AUGS is looking at, it is money for putting trash devices in and taking trash out after it injures women.”
Dr. Vigna continues, “Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is a biomaterial used nearly everywhere else in the world but is not in the United States. PVDF is more expensive than polypropylene but is available in countries without the resources as the Unitied States. PVDF used in mid- urethral sling works as well as polypropylene slings with less soft tissue inflammation. In otherwords, there is no real downside when compared to polypropylene except cost.”

Dr. Vigna concludes, “Ethicon, Coloplast, and Boston Scientific clearly controls the market in the United States and controls the minds and opinions of AUGS. The leadership at AUGS is waiting for a safer sling. That sling is made of PVDF which has less inflammatory response of soft tissues and is as effective at treatment of stress urinary incontinence and is available across the world, except the United States.”
